About Circle City Spin
Me interviewing Obi Toppin in Chicago.

Hello all. Tony East here, founder of Circle City Spin. That's me above in the photo, I'm the guy who is not Obi Toppin. When I wanted to know more about my favorite teams growing up, I often felt like there was information missing. That's why I started blogging about the Washington Wizards in college, I wanted to fill those gaps.

I hope to do so here as well, but now in a professional setting. Circle City Spin is an independent publication that covers the Indiana Pacers and Indiana Fever. I've covered the Pacers since the 2017-18 season and have seen the rise of the Victor Oladipo groups, a pivot to a new era led by Domantas Sabonis, and now Tyrese Haliburton's continued success. My first season covering the Fever was in 2020 during the WNBA bubble, aka the wubble. I've seen many awful Fever teams, including a 5-31 roster that got booted out of Gainbridge Fieldhouse during renovations. It makes their current ascent with Caitlin Clark and Aliyah Boston supremely impressive.

I hope to cover both teams in my voice, which is (for better and for worse) data-driven and research-filled, as well as in the voice of the players and coaches themselves. I love studying the Collective Bargaining Agreement of both the NBA and WNBA as well as the strategy of basketball and hope to help others understand those aspects of both the Pacers and Fever.

About Me

I'm an Indiana University graduate, go Hoosiers, but did not study journalism or communications — rather, I majored in mathematics and public finance. I've learned everything I know on the job and by watching others do it, and I've been lucky that so many great journalists have covered the Pacers at the same time as myself. I have covered professional basketball for nearly a decade with work appearing in SB Nation, Bleacher Report, Fansided, Forbes, On SI, and Basketball Feelings. I've also hosted the Locked On Pacers podcast since 2017. Like everyone, I have professional goals — but to pull a cliche used often in sports, I truly just want to get better at this every day. I hope it shows up in the work.
